Hand carved jade slips, sixteen pieces inscribed in small seal script, this poem by Li Bai (701 – 762) of the Tang Dynasty and the golden age of Chinese poetry, translated “Drinking Alone By Moonlight”. It evokes a melancholy theme of solitude and search for companionship.
There are sixteen inscribed pieces framed by two end pieces. At one time it was held together with silk threads, it is now affixed to the backplane of a shadow box presentation.
There is indication that it has been buried, possibly submerged at some point. While two expert appraisers have looked at it, but could not reach a consensus for a precise age.
It is an incredible statement piece for any collector. A show piece that will anchor any space.
