Description

This monumental figural vase was produced by Gerbing & Stephan in Bodenbach, Bohemia, during the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, circa 1890–1900. The firm is well regarded for its sculptural art pottery combining classical revival forms with emerging Jugendstil sensibilities.

The vase is modeled in amphora form and features a finely rendered putto figure leaning over the rim, integrated directly into the body rather than applied as a separate element. The lower section is richly sculpted with grotto and marine motifs, including shells and organic relief, forming a fully ceramic base rather than a later metal stand.

Executed in terracotta with hand-applied earth-toned coloration, the surface retains a natural matte finish consistent with period production. The scale and construction indicate the vase was intended as a floor or pedestal piece, suitable for grand interior settings rather than table use. Comparable Gerbing & Stephan examples appear in European auction records, including closely related figural models with alternate base constructions.

This example remains structurally sound with age-appropriate surface wear and an undisturbed patina, presenting as an honest and compelling survivor of Continental decorative arts at the turn of the century.

Dimensions: 20.5″ Tall X 10.5″ Dia.
